In The Reception, I invite viewers into a vibrant gathering of souls where individual identities merge and dissolve in a chorus of color and gaze. Working in acrylic on canvas, I fuse the fragmented perspectives of Cubism with the explosive joy of Fauvist color, using bold black contours to define interlocking planes of magenta, emerald, cobalt, and coral. These flat, unmodulated fields vibrate against one another, while visible brushwork in the patterned clothing adds a tactile warmth that grounds the composition. The overlapping female faces—seen from multiple angles with diverse eyes and expressive lips—create a dynamic, puzzle-like surface that refuses traditional depth or singular viewpoint, mirroring how we truly perceive and shape one another.

This painting explores intersubjectivity: the truth that the self is never isolated but emerges through relationship. Just as the faces interpenetrate and skin tones flow across boundaries, I see identity as permeable—colored by context, perception, and connection rather than fixed ethnicity or performance. In the crowded “reception” of life, we receive and are received; our masks become transparent, revealing a shared emotional current beneath. This work celebrates a humanist vision: difference is not division but the vibrant material of community. To be seen in multiplicity is to become more fully ourselves.

I hope The Reception pulses with life-affirming energy—an antidote to alienation that welcomes every viewer into the conversation.
